Windows 11. The biggest part of this announcement would be the unveiling of a major UI change, codenamed Sun Valley. As you know, a significant part of the UX changes are borrowed from the Windows 10X shell, and Windows 10X is not coming to market. Now, unsurprisingly, the Windows 11 leaks begin.
What’s new in Windows 11:
– Windows 11 gets a whole new design. Microsoft clearly needs a good reason to reverse its previous claims and still ditch Windows 10 by introducing a new operating system number. And the new design is great for that. The Redmond giant has long been preparing a redesign for an update codenamed Sun Valley (“Sunny Valley”); apparently, Windows 11 was released under this name. The Sun Valley project has been appearing on the Internet for a long time: Microsoft regularly revealed details of the new interface style, experts shared previously unknown information, and popular designers in their circles drew realistic concepts based on all this data.
– Startup and system items float above the bottom panel. Start is the calling card and face of all the latest versions of Windows. As expected, in Windows 11, the developers will transform it again, but not so much functionally as visually – the “Start” window floats above the bottom panel. Of course, this minor change makes the system look much fresher. Judging by the information from the network, Microsoft will not fundamentally change the “guts” of this menu; innovations will only affect the design of the window. The control panel will also float and the layout will be exactly the same as on Start. The action center is combined with the control buttons; something similar has been used for a long time in some other operating room systems. Almost every mention of this new menu indicates that it will be an island, with control buttons on a separate panel, notifications on another, and individual items (like the player) on another.
– Right angles disappear, they are replaced by check marks. True, the opinions of experts and concept designers differ on this: some are sure that Microsoft will not change its traditions and keep right angles, while others are sure that in 2021 Microsoft will follow the fashion for rounding. The latter better fits the definition of “everything new Windows”: simply pointing to a menu isn’t enough to make a new design count as truly new. The file is expected to affect almost everything on the system, from context menus and system trays to all application windows. True, the opinions of concept designers differ on this issue: some draw roundings on all possible interface elements, others combine them with right angles.
– There will be a backgroundtranslucent with a blur throughout. There is disagreement on the web about the island style of window display, the corner design and the floating effect of the menus, but almost everyone agrees on the transparency of the windows. The vast majority of layout leaks and renders show transparency and blur in all windows, be it at least the Start menu or File Explorer. Moreover, these effects are even in the assembly of the canceled Windows 10X operating system, which Microsoft developed in parallel with the Sun Valley project for devices with two screens and weak devices. The so-called acrylic transparency implies the use of new effects when hovering over elements, as well as increased space between elements: those parts of the interface with which the user interacts will surely become larger, and page titles will be thicker.
– New typography that was already shown. Windows 11 will most likely use the Segoe UI variable responsive font by default, which already appeared in Windows 10 Build 21376 for Insiders. The advantage is that it is equally suitable for small texts and large inscriptions. This distinguishes it from standard fonts, which are initially created for a small or large size. For example, the stable version of Windows 10 now uses the Segoe UI font designed for 9pt. With small inscriptions it becomes difficult to read and with large inscriptions it seems unclear.
– Windows 11 gets new icons and Windows 95 icons are gone. Yes, they are still used. Microsoft will eventually change the icons used throughout the system. It’s not just folder shortcuts, trash cans, and other icons in File Explorer. We are talking about all the icons available in the Shell32 directory. The Windows 95-era icons have stuck, and only recently did Microsoft update their design in one of the insider collections, moving to Windows 11, of course.
– Windows 11 will have functional innovations: there are many, but they are all small. Much less is known about the features of the next update than about its design. But since Windows 11 and Windows 10X (the canceled operating system for weak and complex devices, the image of which was leaked to the network) were developed in parallel, we can safely assume that all the features of the latter will appear in Windows 11. For example , Windows 11 will show when a computer is using the camera; the corresponding indicator will be displayed in the system tray.
