The high-rise focuses on various characters who live in the Washington Heights neighborhood, on the north end of Manhattan. In the middle of the show is Usnavi, a store owner who takes care of aging women next door, figures for a beautiful girl who works in an adjoining beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the beaches of the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavis, has returned to the neighborhood from her freshman year of high school news for her parents, who have spent their lives saving a better life for their daughters. In the end, Usnavi and the people in the surrounding area understood what it meant to be at home.
